How to Pick an Online University.

February 9, 2010

Private colleges and Universities are known for their high standards and excellent academic programs.  Their online programs are no different.  If you are ready to get your Bachelor’s degree, or to continue your post-secondary education, consider an online private college or University degree program.

Getting an education through an online private college or university degree program can be an experience that is every bit as enriching, interpersonal, and dynamic as attending college the traditional face-to-face way.  A big misconception is that online learning is impersonal.  This isn’t the case at all. Programs offered online present the same opportunities for group work, independent study, and interpersonal communication as do traditional methods of learning.  In fact, attending college online helps to facilitate the independent learning process, as well as developing time management skills.  Attending an online University takes just as much commitment as the old-fashioned way of going to school, and the potential career and personal benefits are just as great, if not greater.  As the popularity of attending college online increases, more campus-based private colleges and Universities are joining the fast-growing group of online-only private colleges and Universities in offering several different levels of degrees over the Internet, presenting students with broader educational options, as well as flexibility and convenience.

There are many advantages for a student seeking a secondary education to choose an online private college and University degree program.  Proximity is a key factor.  A student does not need to live locally to an accredited private college or University.  Attending all classes and submitting coursework online eliminates the need for commuting or relocating.  Earning a degree from an online private college or University is a convenient way to advance your education and training.  A school may offer more sections of popular courses, as well as night and weekend courses, which allows a student more flexibility.  This is an ideal situation for those who work full time and/or care for a family. Additionally, if you are a student who is considering returning to school after several years, going to school online is a perfect way to ease into the routine of class work and projects again, and can lessen the stress of feeling the need to fit in with younger students.  Besides, who wouldn’t find it appealing to attend college from the comforts of home?

If you are worried that you might not be able to afford a degree from an online private college or University program, there are options.  Some employers might offer to pay a portion or even all tuition and fees toward an employee receiving a degree.  Also, financial aid in the form of grants, loans, and even scholarships might be available to you. Check with the particular online program of interest to see what financial options are available.

The type of degree you can earn through an online private college or University degree program is vast.  Aside from earning Associate’s, Bachelor’s, and PhD degrees, professionals can continue their educations and stay up to the minute in their fields. Online learning is no longer just for web designers and computer programmers.  You may study Business, Social Sciences, Criminal Justice, Humanities, Mathematics, Human Resources, Fine Arts, and various Healthcare programs.  Depending on the type of degree you are seeking (graduate, for example), there may be certain academic requirements that you have to fulfill to be able to attend.  Make sure you do your research when trying to decide on an online private college or University.

With the prevalence of the Internet and technologies such as teleconferencing available today, it’s possible to come away from the experience of attending and online private college or University not only with a degree, but also being more in tune with technology which has the potential to broaden your career opportunities even more.  Seeking an education through an online private college or University degree program is a legitimate, convenient, and flexible way for you to advance you education, as well as your career and personal potential.

Online Distance Learning : A Dynamic Way of Getting a Degree.

February 3, 2010
Earning a degree these days is not constrained by location and time. With the advent of online distance learning, one has the option to earn undergraduate, post graduate and specialized degrees from a variety of well known and distinguished colleges and universities that provide such programs at very reasonable rates. One of the greatest things that the internet has given to us is the ability to communicate with each other at such an inexpensive rate. Communication is now possible from one continent to the other via electronic mail, electronic chat and video to video communication. Such tools provide online distance learning the ability to increase its scope and market to those who otherwise would not think of getting such an education.

Before the days of the internet, there were institutions that offered degree programs via registered mail. The process was that these colleges would mail the student the necessary reading assignments and workload on a bi monthly basis. The student would then take on such reading and assignments and mail back their reports within the allotted time frame. Correspondence between the student and institution was static and done through written correspondences. Every once in a while, like once a semester, the student would be asked to go to that institution to do some reporting or meet up with the professor for consultation and mentoring. But more often than not, students enrolled in the program did not have the time to go to such campuses so there was hardly any interpersonal relationship between the professor and the student.

These days, things are so much different. Online distance learning enables the student to communicate with the professor on a daily basis if needed through electronic mail. This establishes an online” mentoring” session between student and teacher. There are some courses that offer live video feeds of classes which the student can participate. Students can also post questions in such video feeds which can be answered by the professor.

Communication between the student and the teacher is dynamic. This is important to the student so that any inquiries or questions about the subject may be answered. There is a somewhat interpersonal relationship between student and teacher. The rapport between these two people is instrumental in making the subject more vibrant and vivid. It peaks the interest of the student, and challenges the teacher to dig deeper on the subject. It is a mutual beneficial relationship that enables both to learn more. It is this process of learning that is important in any educational program: the ability to logically impart an idea with the flexibility to defend it.

Why Online Business Degrees are an Ideal Choice for Distance Learning Students.

January 19, 2010
The truth is, there are more and more degrees being offered online.  Now, the questions are: 1) What are the top online degrees being available; 2) What makes these degrees so popular?  Recent surveys indicate that while trends to fluctuate quarterly, some degree programs have consistently remained popular with online students.  These are: Business, health care, education, criminal justice, and computers and information technology.Let us examine why degrees in business have remained on the popularity list for so long.  What sets them aside from other degree programs?  As you can imagine the field of business is a competitive one, and to be successful one must be able to stand out from the crowd:  You can do this by: advancing your education, getting a promotion, getting more professional experience; and becoming an expert in your particular niche.

One advantage of online business degrees is that they are offered at many levels of study, including associate degree level, bachelor degree level, masters degree level (MBA) doctorate degree level (DBA), and also business certificates at the graduate and undergraduate level.  An online degree is thus an opportunity to set yourself aside from your competitors.

The MBA degree has made its mark as the industry standard for measuring success and accomplishment in business. This is true for mid-level business managers and business professionals who want to move beyond entry-level tasks and responsibilities for something more challenging.  Student demographics indicate that many professional in online MBA degree programs simultaneously work and take classes.

An additional advantage of considering pursuing an online business administration degree is that there are multiple areas of focus to choose from including: accounting and finance, business leadership, human resource management, e-business, risk management, organizational management, project management, international business, marketing and sales, small business management, operations management, retail management, sport and entertainment management, and information technology management to mention a few areas of focus.  This wide selection does make business administration stand out from other degree programs.

Good online business degrees are designed to apply student-centered teaching and learning strategies in order to enhance educational outcomes.  These strategies are: superior instructor-to-student communication and student-to-student; customized strategies which match students schedules and learning styles; quick access to learning tools and resources; and alternative approaches to assessment and evaluation.

A big selling point for online degrees in business is their flexibility and scheduling of classes.  Unlike conventional classrooms, earning a degree on line means you do not have to be physically present to learn, and attending a virtual classroom is ideal for students with a busy schedule.  A word of caution however is to determine whether the online courses are offered synchronously, asynchronously online, or using a combination of both approaches to deliver instruction, as some of the class activities might require synchronous communication.

The U. S. Department of Education reports that 20% of university students choose to major in business.  As we saw with the multiple areas of study, business degrees are ideal for many professional areas of concentration including, marketing and sales, financial management and accounting, and entrepreneurship. In fact, in the U.S. the most popular major is the accounting degree. Accounting remains an important entry-level position for most business sectors.

Other areas in business that continue to see growth and advancement are finance and economics.  Further, employers also look to hire marketing graduates.  This has been precipitated by trends in Internet marketing, and changes in how all kinds of businesses do their advertising, promotions, and sales.  This has also changes the e-business or e-commerce or e-business platform.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that jobs in public relations advertising, marketing, sales and promotions should see a 12% growth between 2006 and 2016.  During that same period, accounting jobs are expected to grow by about 18%.  Expanding economic market and increasing regulatory reforms have caused this increase. While the earning in business vary by industry, level of education, years of professional experience, and specific business major, some reported potential earnings are: $137,000 for financial analysts, $96,000 for project management positions, $97,170 for public relations managers, $113,400 for marketing managers, and $106,790 for sales managers.

Business professionals work in just about any industry that you can think of.  This ranges from financial institutions and banks, the education industry, not-for-profit agencies, manufacturing firms, sports and entertainment, etc.  Because each business requires a diverse range of knowledge and skills from its employees, it is important to first figure out your interests and talents and what you can contribute to your industry or employer.  Next, it is advisable to do some in-depth research on online degree programs that will address your interests.  Important to remember, also, is that you should really only consider online colleges that are recognized and accredited.

Popular Teaching Degrees Online.

January 12, 2010
The field of education offers numerous choices and employment avenues.  This is particularly true of the teaching profession where teachers can choose the student audience they intend to teach as well as the subjects they are going to impart knowledge.  Teachers can teach at different levels such pre-school, elementary school, middle school, high school and of course, college level.  Apart from subject level teaching such as Mathematics or Biology, there are also opportunities for adult literacy teachers or ESL teachers.

Careers can span roles such as tutors, assistants and class room aides for those who are foraying into the teaching discipline.  Experienced teachers can complete the appropriate programs to move into areas such as researchers, curriculum specialists, counselors, writers and day care administrators.

Training degrees span Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs available through online and offline channels.  A Bachelor’s degree is usually for 3-4 years whereas Master’s and Doctoral degrees last 2 years.  They also require dissertation and internships under the guidance of experienced educators.  Importantly, a Bachelor’s degree in Teaching or its equivalent is a must to enter into the teaching profession.

A Bachelor’s degree such as Bachelor of Fine Arts in Education and Teaching or Teacher license usually covers child development and learning, educational psychology, pedagogical techniques, classroom management, curriculum design and assessment and trends in K-12 education.  A Master’s degree offers enhanced career and salary prospects apart from the fact that some states may prescribe it as a minimal expectation.  Course work may include advanced study into program development, curriculum design and development.  The program is intended to also prepare educators for leadership and administrative roles.

License requirements apply for any teaching position and this varies based on the state where you are teaching.  As part of the License requirements, potential teachers need to successfully complete a teacher training program involving supervised practice teaching.  They also need to qualify in the state administered examinations. Though a Bachelor’s degree is sufficient in most states to start the ball rolling for your teaching career, yet some states may specifically require a Master’s degree in Teaching.  In some cases, such states may either provide the option of acquiring the Master’s degree upfront before beginning your teaching career or alternatively, may prescribe that you complete the same within a set period, usually within a few years.

If you already possess a Bachelor’s degree in another discipline, then you may not need to undergo a Bachelor degree in Teaching.  Instead, you may just need to go through a one year teacher training program to ensure that the licensing requirement is met successfully.

Career outlook for licensed teachers is strong with job growth of 12% forecasted through 2016 by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Salaries are fairly lucrative and are largely dependent on the level of education, experience, location and employer.  K-12 teachers averaged in the range of $50,040-$52,450 in 2007.  Niche and in-demand areas such as teachers in Mathematics also attract higher salaries and greater employment prospects.

The following is a list of lucrative careers for those without a four-year degree, presented with median annual salary data.  That figure is then broken down to an hourly rate by dividing by 2080, the typical number of working hours in a year.

With the job arena still very clearly demonstrating the recent recession in the economy, more and more jobseekers are unfortunately finding that the jobs available are going to people that have higher college educations.  Just like any difficult situation, there are a couple of ways to respond to this fact; one is to be upset that you are getting passed over for positions you easily qualify for simply because you do not have the required diploma.  The other way of responding is to acknowledge that in this day and age, corporate hiring teams require that new employees be highly educated, and start looking ways to pay for some advanced schooling.  One of the many grants for a college education would be an excellent option to research.

For the most part, there are four types of federal and state government agency grant programs available to those who are interested in securing grant money for a college education: the FSEO Grant, the Pell program, the Academic Competitiveness Grant, and the SMART program.  All four grants are operated by the United States Federal Government, in which money is granted to a qualifying individual for a university-level education, and because these are grants – the money never needs to be paid back to the granter.  All four programs mandate that you submit the FAFSA application for Federal student support, and some require that you meet other standards too.  Let’s take a quick look at each program, what the program is, and who qualifies for it.

The FSEO Grant, or Federal Supplemental Equal Opportunity program, is awarded based on monetary need of the applicant.  Individuals who are awarded this grant demonstrate a measurable financial need and are given a pre-defined amount of grant funds according to how much FSEO money their respective educational institution has, and on how much financial assistance they are receiving from other fiscal sources. The Pell program provides more financial assistance than the FSEOG, with less stringent financial need requirements. Naturally it has additional suitability stipulations like attending an eligible school, making good grades in your classes and of course, being a US citizen or resident.  For younger students, this option may be best saved for when you no longer have to record your family’s income on the FAFSA application.

The Educational Competitiveness grant only applies to first and second year students, and is primarily based on how difficult your studies were in earlier schools.  Each state holds its own opinion of what a “difficult” course of study in high school is and these courses can be research on the US Department of Education’s official web site.  Along the same vein, the SMART Grant, or Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent program, is addressed at the third and fourth year level with students enrolled in technical fields of study like mathematics and various types of engineering.

If by some remote chance you don’t qualify for any of the programs discussed above and find that you cannot apply for a government grant – then you may need to expand the scope of your search.  There exist a large number of available grant programs and other financial assistance initiatives that will contribute large sums of money to send qualified individuals to college for a higher education.  For example, the American Medical Association sponsors a number of programs that will train doctors and other medical personnel.  If for some reason you have expended all available grant programs without success, there are a number of low cost loans available from state and federal government agencies and non-profit foundations that are pretty easy to apply for and nearly any college student should meet the requirements for.
